Sat, Mar 14

The originally scheduled 3/14/2020 “Notes from the Peace Corps” community concert has been postponed (exact date TBD). Based on guidance from the San Francisco Department of Health to cancel or postpone large non-essential gatherings and the following shelter-in-place order, we have made the decision that our most responsible course of action is to postpone the concert. An Evening of Classical Music Celebrating the Peace Corps!

The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band is partnering with the Northern California Peace Corps Association on a concert program that highlights elements of the Peace Corps mission and experience, and regions where they have made a difference.

The mission of the Peace Corps is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

Third Goal through Music

Through music, Northern California Peace Corps Association and the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band promote a better understanding of cultures across the globe.

The program includes music that speaks to the values of the Peace Corps and the work of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) as well as music by composers from countries where the Peace Corps has served. Program highlights include:

  • Symphony No. 3, “JFK” by Boysen
  • In the Steppes of Central Asia by Borodin
  • Lesotho Variations by Carr (RPCV, Lesotho, 1995-97)
  • Persian Dance No. 2 by Molookpour
